3 Tips for Wearing Braces in the Workplace

Sometimes in life it can be fun to feel like a kid again. Running through a sprinkler, rewatching a favorite childhood movie, or even catching up with a friend you’ve known forever can all make you feel youthful. But one way that may be harder to appreciate is wearing braces as an adult. After all, wire and bracket braces are typically considered to be for teens, not for fully grown professionals, right? Well, the truth is that braces are perfect for patients of any age. In fact, it’s often easier to care for them as an adult than it would be as a kid. If you’re beyond high school and embarking on an orthodontic treatment with traditional braces, here’s how you can care for (and have fun with!) your braces while working in a professional setting.

Pack Your Bag

If you work outside the home, chances are you will be eating at least a few meals a week at the office. Unfortunately, your braces won’t be able to wait until you get home to be cleaned, so be sure to pack a care kit with all your necessary supplies, including:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental floss and floss threaders
  • Mouthwash
  • Braces brushes
  • Dental wax
  • Over-the-counter pain medication
  • Lip balm

Water, Water…

Staying hydrated during orthodontic treatment is essential to keeping your teeth clear of debris and rinsing away cavity-causing bacteria. Consider investing in a reusable bottle to refill throughout the day so you’ve always got water on hand.

Plan Meals Wisely

Speaking of eating, keep in mind that some foods are better for braces than others, especially right after an adjustment. In the days immediately after a wire change, stick to soft foods, and avoid noticeable foods like broccoli or beets that can get trapped in your brackets and embarrass you in that post-lunch meeting!

Don’t Be Afraid to Smile

While you may be a little shy to showcase your new hardware at first, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Many of your coworkers may have had braces themselves or might have a family member who wears them, making them a great source for guidance or support. In fact, your braces could even be the catalyst of a new work friendship!

Remember, it’s normal to feel a little awkward when debuting a new pair of braces at the workplace, but armed with the right supplies and information, you’ll soon get the hang of your new routine, and with time, a beautiful, youthful smile to share with the world!
